Partial and Semi-partial (Part) Correlations

Partial correlation rYX2× X1: allows you to examine the relationship between two variables with the effect of the third (or third & fourth etc.) removed from both. Can be viewed as the average of the simple bivariate correlations across levels of the third, "nuisance" variable (the one that has been "partialed out").

Semipartial correlations (also called Part correlations) rY(X2× X1): allows you to examine the relationship between two variables with the effect of the third removed from one.
