Suggested activities following the reading of this story:
1. The bear counts backwards from 10. (10. 9. 8. 7..) For the countdown. You
can practice this with your child. The bear counters can be lined up and removed
one by one as you count backwards or placed in a row one by one as you count
forwards.
2.Included is a recipe for Moon Cake you may like to make with your child. She/he can help you measure the ingredients.
3. Bear looks at his own paw prints and does not recognize them. He thinks that they are too big to belong to a bear mouse - perhaps big enough for a moon bear. Your child can trace his /her own footprints and the footprints of others in the family and compare them. Ask your child to decide the smallest. Largest etc..The prints can be placed in order form smallest to largest or in a order decided by your child.
4. The seasons are mentioned in this story. You can discuss the sequence of the seasons with your child and discuss changes and attributes of each season .
Moon Cake
Ingredients
375 ml all-purpose flour
125 ml sugar (white125 ml brown sugar
60 ml cocoa
5 ml salt
75 ml melted butter
5 ml vanilla
5 ml baking soda
15 ml white vinegar
250 ml milk
250 ml marshmallows (mini)
Method
1. Heat the oven to 180* (350*f) .
2. In a 23 cm. Square cake pan, put the flour , sugars, salt and cocoa. Mix gently together to make some nice MOON SAND.
3. With a spoon, make three nice craters, right to the bottom of the MOON SAND: one large, one medium-size and one small.
4. Place the baking soda in the medium-size crater, the melted butter in the large one and the vanilla in the smallest crater. And... the next step... pour the vinegar into the medium-size crater. Careful! The volcano erupts!
5. When the volcano is calm, pour the milk over the MOON SAND. This is the great white wave....
6. Mix the MOON SAND, which has been covered by the great white wave, until you have nice MOON MUD.
7. Place the marshmallows on top of the MOON MUD. These are MOON ROCKS.
8. Put the MOON in the oven for 35 minutes.( It doesn't need to be taken out of the pan when it's done.)
9. Serve pieces of your MOON and dream of the day when you might have a bite of Saturn or Jupiter or...
