Measurement Curriculum outcomes
Primary
D1
compare and order object based on length, capacity, and mass
D3
sort items based on measurement attributes
Grade
1
D1
identify procedures (not involving units) to compare and/or order lengths,
capacities and areas
D2
identify procedures (not involving units) to compare and/or order masses
and durations of time
D3
identify and use non-standard units to estimate and measure length, capacity,
time, mass and area
Grade

demonstrate a sense of how much 1L is
D6
estimate and measure capacity in non-standard and standard units
D7
demonstrate a sense of how much 1kg is
D8
estimate and measure mass in non-standard and standard units
D12
choose appropriate units with which to estimate and measure, and perform
measurements
D13
demonstrate an understanding that the size of the unit used affects the
number describing the measurement
D14

Money curriculum outcomes
There are no outcomes specifically
about money.Instead, money provides
a real world context to explore whole numbers, addition, and subtraction.Money
is mentioned in the Elaboration or Worthwhile Tasks for the following SCOs:
Grade 1: A6, A11, A12, B1, B2,
B3, B5, B7
Grade 2: A2, A3, A5, B10, C5
Grade 3: A2, A4, A5, B4, B9, B10,
B11
Money activities:
Skip counting money
Counting money is a common context
for counting by 5s and 10s.This
can be done as a special activity or as part of the day to day business
of counting up lunch money or whatever.(SCO
1-A3, A6)
Sum it up
Assign each letter a value (e.g.,
A=1¢, B=2¢, etc.)
·What
is your name worth?
·What
words could you buy for 75¢?
·What
is the most expensive word you can think of?
·What
is the least expensive word you can think of?
Base 10 accounting
Use dimes and pennies along with
Dienes base 10 blocks to explore addition and subtraction of two digit
numbers. This could be done in the context of a play store or other shopping
scenarios.
E.g.,You
have 4 dimes, and you need to give someone 13 cents. How
can you do it?
(Note:
Dont try to use coins instead of base 10 blocks. They
are much more abstract.A dime isnt
ten pennies, it is worth ten pennies.)
Comparing coins
Make a concrete pictograph using
coins to show how many equal a dollar.100
pennies in a row will be almost 2 metres long.
