Most of us see walls and pavements made
of bricks every day. Almost all of them are made of standardized
2 by 3 by 6 bricks. But that standard form can be put together in
many ways. Bricklayers have long explored different ways to arrange
bricks for structural and aesthetic reasons. From a mathematician's
point of view brick patterns are interesting as a case of plane symmetry
under constraints. This web site explores the patterns that can be
made with bricks from a mathematical perspective, and also as an exploration
of the architectural creativity of human beings.
