Welcome to Acadia and the School of Recreation Management and Kinesiology. This is an introductory course specifically designed for first-year Kinesiology students. We will cover a variety of topics in the field of physical activity to provide you with a basis of understanding for other courses in your program.
Classes Some classes will be related directly to textbook material. Other lectures/discussions will be based primarily on supplementary materials and guest lecture presentations. The information technology labs will help you become more familiar with your computer and with how it can assist you in your studies.
Class attendance and participation If you miss a class for some reason, be sure to check with others for any assignments, or announcements made that day. You are responsible for all material and information given in class. In addition to class attendance, class participation is expected and encouraged, and will be part of your grade. Your thoughts are important, and they matter. Papers and written assignments You will do a significant amount of reading and writing in this class. Written assignments should be typed and double spaced, unless the format of the assignment suggests another layout (ie. questions and answers). For all papers, prepare a cover page, put your name on each page and staple multiple pages together in the upper left corner. Also, spelling, grammar, punctuation and writing style will count in a general way on all papers. **If reading and retaining information or writing well pose difficulties for you, confidential assistance is available at the Counselling Centre in Godfrey House. Evaluation The midterm test will be held during class time on XX (A1) and XX (B1) 1998. On days when readings are due, a quiz may be given to ensure that you have mastered the content of the assigned reading. Since we learn best in small doses, it is important to master material as the course progresses. Surprise quizzes may be given at any time. The results will contribute to your final grade. Your final course grade will be determined by your test grades, grades on all papers and projects, quiz grades, and your class participation. To be successful within an organization or system, you must know how that system works. At Acadia University there are structures and regulations which govern academic matters. To do this assignment you'll need the Acadia University Calendar 1998/1999 and the Kinesiology Student Handbook (1998-1999). Read the directions below, then go ahead. Click on Calendar Highlights. Click on File, then Save as… Save the document to your hard drive as an HTML file (ie. filename.html). Exit Netscape. Open the file in Word. Click on File, then Save as Word document. Now you can edit the assignment and fill in your answers. Students will select a research article from a designated journal and analyze the article according to specified guidelines. For further details click on Journal Article Assignment. Groups of four students will be assigned to research information about a campus organization. This information will be the basis of a five minute oral presentation (using PowerPoint) to the class. The assignment will be discussed during class time.
