The Parties' Women Candidates in e-2000
"An important element in the political representation of women is their very presence in the central decision-making arenas of politics, particulary the representative institutions of government."  Lynda Erickson, "Entry to the Commons," in Women and Political Representation in Canada, Manon Tremblay and Caroline Andrew, eds.  (Ottawa:  University of Ottawa Press, 1998), p.220"Women constitute over half of the Canadian electorate, yet they account for less than one-quarter of Canadian legislators, Cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and judges.  This dramatic under-representation is one of the most striking facts about Canadian government and politics."
Heather MacIvor, Women and Politics in Canada (Peterborough:  Broadview Press, 1996) p.278"We want women leaders today as never before. Leaders who are not afraid to be called names and who are willing to go out and fight. I think women can save civilization. Women are persons." - Emily Murphy - 1931

Where They Stand
an extract from the Calgary Herald story "Gender gap separates voters"
by Suzanne Wilton, Calgary Herald, 1 November 2000

National party policies as they pertain to women:

- Canadian Alliance: No specific policies for women; instead, a proposed fair tax plan that offers a deduction for child-care expenses if they occur outside the home.

The plan will also introduce a $3,000- per-year, per-child tax deduction and every parent of a child under 16 will receive this deduction.

Spousal exemption amount will increase from $6,140 to $10,000.

- Liberal Party of Canada: Specifically targets women in areas of health and child care.

Platform promises to give stay-at-home moms unspecified tax benefits; inject $45 million into the fight against breast cancer; fund a National Child Benefit, a "comprehensive system of support for low-income families."

- Progressive Conservative: No specific policies for women; instead a proposed plan to reduce the tax burden on Canadian families. The plan would increase the married and equivalent-to-spouse amount to $12,000 by 2005. If elected, they would also introduce a child amount of $1,176 per child, which is equal to a $200 tax cut.

- New Democratic Party: No specific policies for women, but would double the Child-Tax Benefit and create a National Early Years Fund for early childhood education and child care; double the federal contribution to income support for young farming families.
