Lesson 6
Position of Pronouns: Indirect Pronouns and EN

Let's look at another sentence with other pronouns:

  1. What's the verb ? a donné.
  2. Ask the question : Il a donné QUOI? Des points (this is a direct complement but it contains a PARTITIVE ARTICLE 'DES', therefore, this complement has to be replaced by EN).
  3. Choose 'EN' from the table and drag it over 'des points de participation'.
  4. Now, let's drag the 'EN' pronoun to the set of dots in the answer.
  5. Now, let's look at the answer.
  6. As you know 'EN', cannot remain after the verb, but has to be shifted in front of the verb like this.

Now, let's turn to the second complement: AUX ÉTUDIANTS.

  1. Let's try the question with À since we have AUX (À LES) ÉTUDIANTS. Vous avez donné des points de participation À QUI (people)? The answer is: Aux étudiants. It works.
  2. We have an indirect complement.
  3. Find the number and gender of the AUX ÉTUDIANTS : PLURAL and MASCULIN.
  4. Choose LEUR and drag it over 'aux étudiants'.
  5. Now, let's drag the 'LEUR' pronoun to the second set of dots.
  6. Now, let's look at the answer.
  7. Now, we know that the LEUR has to be shifted in front of the verb, but there is already the pronoun 'EN' there. We have to decide which one comes first. Let's look at the table.
  8. According to the table LEUR should come before EN. Let's move LEUR in between IL and EN.
  9. Now, let's read the revised sentence: - Oui, il leur en a donné.

Let's proceed to Exercise 8.
