Lesson 7
Position of Pronouns: Direct Object Pronouns and the Adverb Y

Let's look at another sentence with Direct Object Pronouns and the Adverb Y.

First, let's explain when the Y is used as an adverb. It is used as an adverb when it means THERE. For instance,

- Vas-tu à Halifax samedi?
- Oui, j'y vais (I go there).

ATTENTION, we have to replace Matthieu et Sylvie and à la bibliothèque. Let's try to find the first underlined one, and then the other.

  1. What's the verb ? Vois-tu.
  2. Ask the question : Tu as vu QUI? Matthieu et Sylvie.
  3. Find the number of 'Matthieu et Sylvie' - PLURAL.
  4. Choose LES and drag it over Matthieu et Sylvie.
  5. Now let's look at the answer. Oui je vois les souvent...
  6. As you know, LES cannot remain after the verb, but has to be shifted in front of the verb like this.

Let's deal with Y now.

  1. Choose Y from the table and drag it over à la bibliothèque.
  2. Now, let's look at the answer.
  3. Let's drag Y to the dotted line in the answer.
  4. As you know Y cannot remain after the verb, but has to be shifted in front of the verb, but there is already a direct object pronoun there. We have to decide which one comes first. Let's look at the table.
  5. It goes after the LES pronoun.
  6. The sentence should read: Oui, je LES Y vois souvent. Ils sont très sérieux!

Now let's do some exercises.
