Steps to follow to create a picture essay:

1.  In the directory where you normally store notes or assignments for French 1213, create a new folder and entitle it Mon Voyage.   Make sure you know exactly where this folder is because you will use it to store images as well as your final essay.

2.  Decide which places you wish to visit and then for which landmarks, monuments, buildings, activities, souvenirs, famous people etc. you would like to find pictures.

3.  Search the web for the pictures you have decided upon.  When you find an image you might want to use, right-click on it and from the menu that appears on your screen, select 'save image'.  In the dialogue box that appears, browse for the folder you created in Step 1 and save the image there.  Continue your search until you have accumulated all the images you need for your essay.  (The number of images is up to you; whatever you feel is appropriate to enhance your text without overwhelming it).

4.  Open a new document in Microsoft Word and save it in the Mon Voyage folder.  This will be your actual essay.   Type in and check carefully the text of your document.  Decide at this stage which font you want to use in which size (and colour, if relevant).

5.  Insert pictures into your document.  You can do this in three different ways.

(i)  The simplest way is to have a few sentences of text, followed by an image; a few sentences of text, followed by an image.  To do this, place your cursor at the start of a fresh line, then go to the INSERT menu and select Picture, then From File.  Using the dialogue box that appears, locate the folder with your pictures, select the relevant image file and click OK.  You can resize the picture, if you need to, by clicking on it to bring up the frame, and then using the grabbing points on the frame to make the necessary adjustments.

(ii)  To use a layout similar to the one in the Model Text, you will need to use Text boxes.
First type all your text into your document.  Then decide where, in that text, you want the pictures to go.  Place the cursor somewhere near that spot.  From the INSERT menu, choose Text Box.  At the cursor, you get a cross which you can use to draw a box the size you need.  You can position this box anywhere on the page by dragging it.
From the FORMAT menu, choose Text Box.  At the dialogue box, select Wrapping from the choices along the top, then choose the way in which you wish your text to appear in relation to the image.  You must choose an option from both rows of suggested formats.  Click OK.  Your text will now arrange itself around the box in the manner you have specified.  Click inside the box and from the INSERT menu, choose Picture, and From File.  Browse for your image as described in (i) above and insert the image into the box.

(iii)  Copy the Model Text to your hard disk.  Open it and select Save As from the FILE menu.  Give the document a new title and then overtype the existing text with your own text.  Delete the pictures (select the picture, then hit the delete key) and insert your own pictures into the empty boxes.

Et voilà!!  You have created a picture essay.

6.  To send your document to me as an attachment, open a new message in Pegasus and type in my address (rworvill@acadiau.ca) and a subject (Mon Voyage).  If you want to/need to, type in a message.  Then, select Attachments from the choices at the top of the message.  In the dialogue box, set the options for handling the document as Mailer Decides.   Then browse for your Word Document, select it and hit ADD.  (Word stores the images in the document itself, so you don't need to send the image files as well, just the main document). Return to the main message page and hit SEND.  If you are having trouble doing this, open the HELP menu in Pegasus and locate the instructions for sending attachments.

Bon voyage!
