The Three Musketeers of media

The AITT Media Centre is always a busy place, flying off in all directions as its staff works on projects that dabble into every area of campus and community.

“I work with people from all over campus and every department,” says video producer Dave Sheehan. “I get little windows into every area on campus…from the President’s office to the hockey dressing room.”

Some recent projects include: producing a video that teaches students how to take blood pressure; working with a Gaspereau teacher to help showcase education best practices; and working with the Vaughan Memorial Library to create a set of Flash modules that not only helped Acadia students, but were also accepted into the Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online (PRIMO) database at the American College and Libraries Association.

The Media Centre team includes Sheehan, Music Production Manager Robb Lepper, and Web Presence Manager Scott Olszoweic. Each team member contributes years of experience in their respective fields and an enthusiasm for what they do.

“There’s a symbiosis to what we do,” says Lepper. “Everything’s interdisciplinary. If this shop were like a house…I’d be the interior designer. Scott would be the carpenter.”

While every project the team works on impacts a wide audience, some of them leave an indelible mark on the team members themselves. And although many of their projects do centre on the university, the three guys also get opportunities to work with the larger community.

For instance, Olszoweic worked with education professor Jan Buley and the YMCA in Halifax creating a book that showcased artwork created by children who had recently immigrated to Canada from war-torn countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq. “Looking into the artwork, and some of the messages the kids had, it was like looking into somebody else’s world,” says Olszoweic. “Being a father, it was interesting to see what some of these kids go through to get here.”

Veteran video producer Sheehan recently helped with a multimedia tribute to local art legend Alex Coville called A Measure of a Man. Last year he also traveled to Cuba with Acadia Spanish professor Anna Saroli to film staged conversations to help students at Acadia learn the language better.

While Lepper was originally hired as an audio specialist, in the last few years he’s been learning about video production from Sheehan. Recently, he worked with education professors and a teacher at the Gaspereau school who’s known for her exceptional teaching. Together, they produced a set of nine video teaching modules that each covers a particular teaching issue. For instance, says Lepper, “you might have a challenging kid who’s a bully, but here’s how one teacher overcomes it.”

Essentially, says Olszoweic, “we’re technical people, but we’re also creative storytellers. If somebody has a message they want to communicate…we’re the folks that can make it happen.”

We won a prize!

It ain’t easy being green. Or in the case of Maestro Shizzle, our entry in this year’s Rotary Club Corporate Duck Race, it ain’t easy being being pink-feathered with bling bling that lights up. In fact, Duck Team member Karen Turner had to step in during setup to help race organizers get all of the lights flashing on Maestro.

But the LED lights, motor, and probably the pink feathers helped Maestro win the AITT’s first award ever at the Duck Race. While Maestro wasn’t the first (or the second, third, or even in the top ten) to finish the race, he did win the “Techno-Duck” award for the most technically-advanced duck.

Maestro had a great start as one of the first ducks past the starting line. However, due to a structural flaw, he soon began taking on water and listing to the right bank of the White Rock Canal. However, he did finish the race, beating last year’s AITT entry Captain Skimmer.

The prize is a Labatt Blue Room Pool Party at Dooley’s for 10 people, however the Duck Team has offered to open it up to anyone interested (and the extra cost will be split between everybody). The tentative plan is to catch the cheap wing night at Jungle Jim’s, then head over to Dooley’s. Contact Karen for more details or to sign up.

Videoconferencing chemistry

Currently a six-week pilot, the project proposes to link Bridgetown High School and St. Mary’s Bay Academy with Acadia through the newly commissioned FUNDYweb network. The project began in early May, and will continue for six weeks with lectures from the School of Music, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Mathematics and Statistics faculty.

The lecture included PowerPoint presentation, Excel graphs, and a live titration demonstration.

Duck!

On your mark, get set, and GO! They’re off, in a mad jostling battle for the finish line, each racer vying desperately for that elusive lead, bills quacking and feathers rustling.

Well, not really, since we’re talking about the upcoming Rotary Club Corporate Duck Race. But the competition is no less fierce as AITT duck wranglers Karen Turner, Layla Rashid, Mauricio Duarte, and Jamie Chang prepare our entry for the race on Sunday at the White Rock Canal on the Gaspereau River.

This year’s duck is much more colourful than previous years, as the Duck Team creates a “pimp-style” design for the duck dubbed “Maestro Shizzle”.

“He’s gonna be really bright and feathered with a shiny necklace and a fedora,” says team member Mauricio Duarte. “He’s going to catch the eye of a lot of people.”

There’s a variety of prizes available; including prizes for the first ducks to finish, “Delightful Duck” for the best-designed duck, “Endo Duck” for the last duck to finish, and “Dry Duck” for the first duck to hit the shore.

“If we don’t get first place, hopefully we’ll get the design prize,” says Duarte.

This year’s AITT duck is a modification of last year’s duck, with the notable addition of a large funnel, capped at the end. The idea is that the current will catch the funnel, propelling the duck faster than the competition, much like last year’s Physics Department entry.

The race starts at 1:00 pm at the White Rock Canal on the Gaspereau River, and the Duck Team encourages everyone at the AITT to come out and cheer on Maestro Shizzle. “The duck needs friends,” jokes team member Karen Turner. But seriously, “It’s a really cool, fun event,” says team member Turner. “I went last year and had a great time.”
