Course Content:
Music 1133 is an introduction to the study of music theory. Our focus will be mainly tonal music of the common practice era, though other styles and periods of music may be broached if time permits. While we will concern ourselves to a large extent with diatonic harmony, we will also discuss other components of music theory such as counterpoint, form, analysis, and composition. Classes will consist of lecture/demonstrations and workshop tutorials.

Matters considered include (but are not limited to):

• Diatonic Chord Theory – Triads and Seventh Chords in Major and Minor                Keys
• Tonal Structure and Harmonic Progression
• Figured Bass and Chorale Composition
• Harmonic Analysis
• Musical Form and Organization – Cadences, Periods, Sequences, and Phrases
• Pop/Jazz Chord Notation
