Pronominal Verbs Conjugated with ÊTRE: Reflexive and Reciprocal Verbs

Pronominal verbs can indicate a reflexive action - an action the subject does to or for himself or herself. They can also indicate a reciprocal action - an action two or more subjects do to or for one another.

Examples of reflexive verbs in the passé composé follow:

1) Je me suis levé(e) tard ce matin.

2) Tu t'es lavé(e) en vitesse.

3) Elle s'est peignée.

4) Nous nous sommes habillé(e)s.

5) Vous vous êtes dépêché(e)(s) de sortir de la maison.

6) Ils se sont reposés après la course.

Examples of reciprocal verbs in the passé composé follow:

1) Nous nous sommes téléphoné hier soir. (Remember that WE PHONE TO SOMEONE in French.)

2) Vous vous êtes mariés l'été dernier? (Note that when referring to people of different sexes, the masculine form is used).

3) Ils se sont connus à l'école secondaire.

4) Elles se sont embrassées à plusieurs reprises.
