Files - Backing Up
Backing up your files (or at least
the important ones), is a good thing to practice in order to prevent
losing any critical information. There are a few ways to back
up your work which include:
Floppy Drive (1.4 megs)
RAM Drive (16 - 256 megs)
Network (amounts vary)
CD Burner (700+ megs)
DVD Burner (4.1 GB)
By backing up your files, any information
you may have lost on your PC may be recovered.
Backup Using a Floppy or RAM Drive
Floppy drive backups and RAM drives
are useful for small files and are quick and easy. Simply
plug it in the USB port on your computer and you're set to go.

Backup Using a CD
CD burners can store a large amount
of information and the CD is portable, therefore it can be used
on any computer that has a CD Rom. There are two types of
CD's: CD-R and CD-RW. CD-R's can only be recorded once, while
CD-RW's can record over previous information if necessary.
This is useful for creating large pieces of work that need to be
backed up every day.

Using the Network
When using Acadia's network to backup
and/or to share information, it is important to understand a little
about how the network works. There are three different network
drives available to Acadia faculty. students, and administration:
'AXE', 'ACE'. and 'PLATO'.
Axe is the network drive available for
students. Each student has an axe account where they can store
up to 5MB of schoolwork. It is a good place to backup a lot
of your smaller files.
Ace is the network drive for
administration. They also have an account size of 5MB, which can be
increased if necessary. This is a good place for faculty to store
their research or other general files.
Plato is the network drive used primarily
for teaching purposes. It has three areas: courses, web, and
assignments, which are set up each semester. The courses section
is used by faculty for storing large files which contain information
for specific classes. The web section is where they can create and
store webpage's for their classes. It should not be used for backing
up files. Finally, the assignments section is where faculty set
up folders for students to load their work.
Helpful Hint: If you are working on
your computer and want to put something on the ACE drive, you must
resave the file on the ACE drive every time you alter the original.
This is also true if you are working on the ACE drive and want to
move something onto PLATO. You must save your file again in
order for it to remain up to date. The two computers are not
connected to each other.
Backup Using the Network
Network backups allow you to store
information that you can access from anywhere you are connected
to the network. It also allows others to access the information.
