FrontPage - Using Text & Graphics to Communicate a Message

Inserting a Photo

Pictures are an important addition to any website or presentation. They can make a website more attractive and add any important content that cannot be described in words.

It is very important that you consider Issues of Copyright when using images from the web.

Inserting a picture on your website is very simple, just choose insert on the top menu and scroll down to picture. Now you have a choice as to whether you want to insert a clipart, or a picture from a file.

When you insert a picture on your webpage it is very important that you do not edit the image on the page, editing should be done in an image editor before it is inserted onto the page.  To learn more about editing images see Graphics.

Inserting Clipart is a little different then inserting an image from a file.  When you insert a clipart image, it is not saved in web format so others can view the clipart image.  So, it is very important that you convert the file format to a 'jpeg' or 'gif'.

Fonts and Sizes

Fonts on the web are limited.  Be sure to use a font that is easy to read. San-serif is a good font to use for headlines, while serif is great for the body of the text. Be sure to test the font size; make sure that it is big enough to see without having to squint (16-18).

Different fonts have different personalities; serif fonts tend to lead the eye horizontally, whereas, sans-serif fonts are much simpler and lead the eye up and down. Once you have decided on the intended audience for your site, fonts should be considered. Fonts can be fun, serious, and even artistic; they can add or take away from the message that you are trying to put across to the reader.

Color and Contrast

Color and contrast are very important when creating your page design.  You should use colors that complement one another and can grab the viewer's attention. Colors, like fonts, have personalities; for example, red is bold and powerful while pink is soft, and orange is creative.  Remember to keep only a few colors, too many colors make it hard for the viewer to focus on a certain point.  When choosing the colors, choose colors with purpose.  For example, if your page is about the environment, try a green, yellow, or brown, something that resembles the earth.  With all of this in mind, you also have to remember that contrast should be clear.

Visit this PBS www.pbs.org/flw site for a great example of color and contrast used well.

Layout and Background

When viewing something, ones eyes start in the upper left.  This is useful to know for use of headlines, or other material that you wish for the audience to notice immediately.  The layout should be familiar and consistent on all pages within the site.  It is also good to have the background barely visible so that the viewer does not get distracted by it.   http://ace.acadiau.ca/arts/classics/home.htm
